New Apartment Tenant Survey: 71% of Renters Want Better Security
Apartment renters are increasingly worried about safety in their multifamily housing. Our new survey of over 1,000 American apartment renters revealed that 71% believe that their apartment management should be taking more steps to improve security.
What keeps apartment renters up at night? For a majority, it’s worrying about safety in their apartment complex.
We conducted a comprehensive apartment tenant survey, speaking to over 1,000 American apartment renters about their safety concerns. It revealed a growing demand for better security in apartment complexes — and a wake-up call for multifamily property managers.
The survey results were clear: Tenant safety is a pressing issue that needs stronger attention from apartment management.
Our survey revealed that a staggering 71% of renters think their apartment management should be doing more to enhance apartment safety. This data comes as a wake-up call for the multifamily industry, signaling the urgent need for improved renter safety measures.
Despite many complexes providing some level of security, such as door access control and alarm systems, only half of the respondents felt that these measures effectively prevent crime.
Even more troubling, while 70% are aware of at least one crime happening on their property, 28% said their apartments offer no security solutions whatsoever. Plus, 60% of renters don’t feel completely safe in their homes — even those with some form of security measures in place.

Traditional security measures just aren’t cutting it anymore.
The presence of traditional security measures such as on-site guards and alarm systems didn’t necessarily correlate with a stronger feeling of safety. In fact, 36% of tenants whose apartments have these measures in place don’t feel they effectively deter crime.
As crime becomes bolder and increasingly sophisticated, traditional security solutions seem to be losing their punch. The FBI reported a total of 6.4 million property crimes in 2023, with total estimated losses running into billions. With this data in mind, there’s clearly an urgent need for a new approach to security in multifamily housing.
So how should property managers adapt?
One significant insight from our survey: tenants feel safer when their properties use monitored surveillance cameras. 70% of tenants living in complexes with these cameras expressed confidence in their crime prevention effectiveness.
However, traditional monitored cameras come with their own drawbacks — they can be costly and are susceptible to human error. That’s where modern, AI-enabled surveillance systems offer a compelling solution. These systems analyze live video footage in real-time, reducing the risk of human error and quickening the response time to potential threats.
